E49 Corporation exists to connect, resource and mobilize business, civic, nonprofit and the Church into the Sacramento region. Its mission…to take the biggest issues in the Sacramento region, build sustainable business solutions to solve those issues, and then ask businesses, civic organizations, nonprofits and churches to work together to achieve results. Sounds easy right??
President of E49 Corporation, Tammy Vallejo, says “When we first started this adventure 6 years ago, we thought we would just put a plan in motion and everyone would cooperate to get it done. As you’re reading this, you are probably laughing!! But we didn’t stop trying. Over the last six years we have learned that collaboration can only happen when there is trust. Trust can only happen through long-term working relationships. And long-term working relationships require patience, really being passionate about the end goal and the ability to walk through conflict”.
In 2014, E49’s work culminated in a series of meetings around the biggest issues in our region, Sex Trafficking, Homelessness, Refugee resettlement and Foster Youth. They asked the organizations on the ground in each of these areas, to meet over a period of time to try and come to a collaborative decision on the best way to solve these issues. They looked at each issue through a lens of “prevention”, “intervention” and “transformation”. The three different cohorts came to the same conclusion. There were three foundational gap areas that needed to be met for lasting change and they were all centered in the “transformation” arena. The first was having enough affordable housing solutions. The second was having enough jobs or training to start businesses. And the third was a need for community to provide long-term relationships through coaching, mentoring and discipleship.
So, in January 2015, E49 responded and launched three initiatives centered on those three areas; “City Purpose”, “City Hope”, and “City Worship”. City Purpose will focus on Business Development and Housing, City Hope will focus on community development and community needs and City Worship will focus on telling the stories in the region through a variety of media and the arts.
“We intend to spend the next three years minimum focusing on these areas,” says Vallejo. Because each of the areas, housing, business development and building community are big, audacious areas, we knew we had to build solutions from all sectors: civic, business, nonprofit and church. We also had to set up a structure to handle the three initiatives.
Real Estate with Purpose Group now exists as a social purpose real estate company and has a partner company, M21 Investments LLC. REP Group is for traditional real estate and development while M21 matches investors with measurable social return projects. Each of the two entities has a social return to the nonprofits and works solely and intentionally to provide interest returns to its investors while creating privately funded affordable housing options to the community. E49 Manages the nonprofit and social return side of the projects as well as incubation of ministries and individuals who want to focus on social return projects. Suite 210 is a co-working space that is the physical place to connect, resource and mobilize the groups.
We believe cities can and should have multiple and collaborative approaches to creating sustainable and community based solutions to the needs and goals for its citizens. E49 Corp, Suite 210, M21 and Real Estate with Purpose Group are examples of Social Innovation being used to solve local issues.
